Natural Stone Crafts Indonesia's Hereditary Heritage

Hand art craft that is made of natural stone also rapidly grew in the middle of how fast the era change. The alluring and variety natural stones becoming the choice of beautiful handcraft creation. This village is known with the chisel hand craft from a natural stone with worldwide quality. The wealth of natural stone that is spread because that area is near the volcano mountain making the people becoming this hand craft as their main livelihood.

 The hand craft processed natural stone as a result is stupas, decorative lights, gates, statues, wall ornaments, fountains, table sinks, umpak joglo houses, and various interior decorations that can beautify your home.

 This area has already known as the chiseled natural stone with export quality. Of course, the supporting factor for the existence of this natural stone craft cannot be separated from the craftsman. One of the famous ones in Magelang is Doelkamid Djayaprana. Mr. Doelkamid’s stone carvings have been around the world. His handiwork is a miniature of the Borobudur Temple in Taman Mini, to stone carvings on monuments and government offices.

 Reporting from Merdeka.com, in the early 50s, Mr. Doelkamid visited Borobudur with his father. While looking around the temple stupa, he experienced a magical event where he received a whisper “terusno,terusno,terusno” which means ‘go on’ in Javanese. From then on, he pursued the art of natural stone carving.

Pak Doelkamid’s career path cannot be separated from the influence of his father, Salim Djawaprawira, one of the sculptors in the first Borobudur Temple Restoration from 1907 to 1911. Pak Doelkamid has been familiar with natural stone since he was little. The boulder of Mount Merapi in Kali Pabean is a toy from his childhood.

 In addition to toys, Mr. Doelkamid collects and uses stones for mortar, rice pounder, tombstones, and others. One time, Mr. Doelkamid and his relatives tried to carve a stone like a Buddha’s head, taking the stupa at Borobudur as an example.

Then they try to use the collected stone chunks to make craft tools for daily needs such as boys, rice pounders, tombstones, and the like. The results of the sculpture became his first work that was purchased by an antique dealer on Jalan Malioboro, Yogyakarta.

 Pak Doelkamid’s persistence continued to grow until in 1960 he founded the Sanjaya stone studio. The neatness and high quality of the handiwork of Mr. Doelkamid and his relatives was quickly heard, until it reached the ears of the officials of the capital. The works that are still on display today are the statue of General Gatot Subroto in Purwokerto, the Monument of General Sudirman in Purbalingga, and the Sharp Bamboo Monument in Magelang. Table and home decorations have also been exported abroad.

Apart from Mr. Doelkamid, art craftsmen with natural stones such as crystal stone, agate, continue to develop with various forms and uses. Starting from simple household necessities, it developed into fine art with high commercial value. Like Mr. Doelkamid, everything close to us is a legacy for Indonesia since time immemorial. Mr. Doelkamid succeeded in continuing the culture that was passed down from generation to generation, preserving and working through it.
